If that’s the case, we’re happy to offer our huge range of options in roller skates, scooters, and skateboard merchandise and help you be on your way. If you’re newer than that to skating and still aren’t totally clear on all the details, though, you likely want to find more than just the gear. You’re hoping to find someone who can explain the basics and what to look for based on your body dimensions. You might want to hear from a savvy employee about what exactly makes skates in this kind of skating different to skates in that kind, and so on. A big chain just wants to sell you the product, so they may not be too helpful for all the questions newcomer customers might have.

Skate Connection is different there. We know the sports we cater to have very varied and specific gear requirements, and we make it our business to know the nuances and happily offer to explain them. The last thing any newbie needs is disinterest from a big chain or judgment from the veterans, so our team at Skate Connection looks to be welcoming and nonjudgmental, regardless of your skill level. If, while you’re looking through our store, you want to know what sets roller derby skates aside from other kinds, you won’t have to wonder if you’ll get a proper answer.
A good pair of roller derby skates will be sturdy, offer plenty of padding, and comfortably keep a firm grip on your foot. That’s what makes them different to other skates. You could certainly try to use inlines, quads, or speed skates in place of proper roller derby skates, but they would not offer the same protection and traction as the real thing, not to mention it wouldn’t be allowed!
If you’re looking to buy your first set of roller derby skates, there’s a couple of things you’ll want to know to help you. First, make sure you check the sizing system for the brand you’re browsing! Many roller derby skates brands will use a male US size chart, which will need some converting. These are the last kind of footwear you want to be even slightly too tight or too loose, as that would seriously impede your mobility and reflexes in what is a high contact sport. You also want to check the tightness of the trucks on your skates when they first arrive! The trucks are the base to which the wheels and axles of your skates are connected, and they can be adjusted according to the wearer’s comfort and needs. Much like the size of skates, the trucks should be perfectly adjusted for maximum mobility. Your trucks will likely need some loosening upon arrival since they are often tight by default, so we’re happy to offer our advice if needed!
Feel free to browse our options! Aside from skates, we also offer plenty of padding, helmets, wheels, and classy apparel.
