Well, the answer is that size does matter, but there is quite a lot to consider before deciding on which size to purchase.
The first thing to consider is how the size of the wheels will affect the behaviour of the scooter itself. Basically, the smaller the wheel size, the slower the scooter will be and as such, the larger the wheel, the faster the scooter will go.
Back in the day, the only available sizes were scooter wheels 110mm and 100mm. Today, however, there is a large number of bigger wheel sizes to choose from that most pro riders will use at events such as the X-Games and the Dew Tour. Now we can choose from 120mm and even 125mm wheels too; these aren’t always necessary for those that aren’t planning on pro though.
The age and skill level of the rider is going to make a massive difference on the wheels that you invest in; if you are buying a new scooter for a kid between the ages of 4 - 6, then it’s best to start with beginner wheels like 100mm. As we get up the age range and skill levels, we start to get bigger wheels and our 110 mm scooter wheels in Australia are the most popular size for intermediate riders. Once you’ve mastered the necessary skills and feel physically comfortable on a scooter, then you can just buy the wheels that you feel like you enjoy the most.
Where you ride will also have a direct effect on the size of the wheels that you need for your scooter. If you are an intermediate rider that tends to stick to the streets rather than the park, then 110mm scooter wheels are perfectly fine for your needs - you can always pick up a pair of 120mm if you want to get up a bit more speed.
If you are spending a lot of time in the park and intend on doing tricks and maybe even going pro, then you definitely need to invest in 120mm to 125mm wheels.
